Many companies are starting to require drivers to have the TWIC. So, I put together some basic info including links and articles to help explain what it is.
Basically, the TWIC was established by Congress and is administered by the Transportation Security Administration as a means to ensure individuals who pose a security threat do not gain access to secure areas of the nations maritime transportation system. There is a phased rollout of the program, and like any large program it has its fits and starts. But regardless of what you and I might think of the whole thing, we can be assurred it isnt going to go away.
To obtain a TWIC, an individual must provide biographic and biometric information such as fingerprints, sit for a digital photograph and successfully pass a security threat assessment conducted by TSA. The cost of the TWIC is $132.50 and valid for 5 years. Drivers who already have a hazmat endorsement with background check will pay a reduced fee of $105.25.
